What Is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift is a surgical procedure designed to restore a smoother, more defined neck and jawline by addressing loose skin, underlying soft tissue laxity, and, when appropriate, fullness in the deeper layers of the neck. For many patients, the neck is one of the most powerful areas to treat when the goal is to “wind back time,” because a youthful neck helps the entire face look more refreshed.

One of the key markers of a youthful neck is a sharp cervicomental angle, which is simply the clean, crisp angle where the underside of the chin meets the front of the neck. With aging, this angle can become softer or more rounded due to skin laxity, banding in the neck muscles, or more obvious fullness within the neck. Dr. Cheng’s unique deep structural neck lift technique is designed to recreate that definition not only by tightening and repositioning the deeper supportive layers, but by actually sculpting the deeper tissues of the neck that can contribute to fullness and an aged appearance. Excess skin is then removed in a way that remains natural, without a tight or “pulled” appearance. This unique combination of addressing the deeper neck structures along with any excess loose skin allows for long lasting results.

Dr. Cheng, a facelift and neck lift specialist, approaches these procedures with a focus on natural rejuvenation and refinement while preserving your unique facial identity and expression. His technique has been shaped by elite aesthetic plastic surgery training at Marten Clinic of Plastic Surgery in San Francisco under the tutelage of Dr. Timothy Marten and Dr. Dino Elyassnia, widely regarded as two of the world’s leading facelift and neck lift surgeons. As a result, Dr. Cheng’s philosophy similarly prioritizes subtlety, balance, and facial harmony so your result looks natural in every light and from every angle.

A neck lift is commonly performed as part of a facelift because the lower face and neck age together and are best treated in harmony. However, some patients are candidates for a neck lift alone, particularly when concerns are isolated to the neck, such as patients who have always had a fuller neck, patients with early jowling with a heavier neck profile, or sagging skin and soft tissue largely below the jawline. In the right candidate, an entire neck lift may even be performed with only a small incision that is well-hidden beneath the chin.

What Are the Benefits of a Neck Lift?

A neck lift can deliver a refined, natural-looking improvement in the neck and jawline, often with a substantial impact on overall facial youthfulness. Benefits may include:

  • A sharper, more defined jawline and improved separation between the face and neck

  • Restoration of a cleaner, more youthful neck angle beneath the chin

  • Smoother neck contour with improvement in loose skin

  • Improvement in neck banding when present

  • In some patients, a meaningful reduction in the appearance of a “double chin” or excess neck fullness by addressing deeper tissues beneath the chin and along the upper neck

  • A more elegant profile in photographs and in motion, without looking tight or overdone

The overall goal is a neck that looks naturally rejuvenated, enhancing your facial balance. Because the neck is so visually prominent, subtle improvements can make you look significantly more refreshed without changing your identity.

Who Are Candidates for a Neck Lift?

You may be a good candidate for a neck lift if your primary concern is loss of definition in the jawline or neck and you want a more lasting solution than non-surgical treatments can provide. Ideal candidates often:

  • Notice sagging skin along the neck, excess fullness in the neck under the chin, or a softened neck angle

  • Have visible platysmal banding or “cords” in the neck

  • Feel that the face looks acceptable, but the neck looks aged or heavy

  • Are in good overall health and have realistic expectations

  • Prefer a refined, surgical result that prioritizes natural rejuvenation

During your consultation, Dr. Cheng will evaluate your anatomy and aging pattern to determine whether a neck lift should be performed alone or combined with a facelift for the most harmonious result, and will outline a plan tailored to your goals and tissue characteristics.
